Making the Thyssen more accessible

Through its foundation, Iberdrola collaborates with the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum on social inclusion initiatives seeking to enable children, young people and adults to gain access and take part in accordance with their particular individual needs.

The latest example of the collaboration between the museum External link, opens in new window. and Iberdrola, through its foundation in Spain, is Tejiendo vidas, contando cuadros (Weaving lives, narrating pictures), an easy-reading graphic novel that offers a very special tour of the museum's collections through the biographies of different people. The publication, by the artist and graphic narrator Aitor Saraiba, has been put together based on the choice of works and the life stories of the participants.

Because of lockdown, a WhatsApp group was formed that brought the participants even closer together.

What is Graphic Novel?

The work is part of Graphic Novel External link, opens in new window., an easy-reading, inclusive cognitive accessibility project, created by the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum Education Department with support from the Fundación Iberdrola España and in collaboration with AMÁS Fácil (the AMÁS group easy-reading service).

Another example is the creation of Museo Fácil External link, opens in new window., the first easy-to-read guide to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. This inclusive project enables the adaptation of the texts, graphics and design of publications in order to make them more cognitively accessible to all manner of people with reading comprehension difficulties.

The 'Museo Fácil' content was selected and checked by a team of people with reading comprehension problems.

To prepare it a working team was formed which included people with reading difficulties belonging to diverse functional and intellectual ability groups.

The company's sponsorship has also made it possible to offer the long-running Hecho a Medida External link, opens in new window. (Tailor-made) program free of charge to its participants. For the last ten years, this activity has made it possible for everybody to take part in projects adapted to their particular needs by ensuring that every visitor has equal rights, via the proposals put forward by the museum's Education Department.

Iberdrola has also taken part in the patronage of certain exhibitions of the museum, such as the Sorolla and Fashion External link, opens in new window., exhibition in partnership with the Sorolla Museum, with which it also collaborates.
